Two people were killed, and two officers wounded Monday in a shooting at a northern Indiana grocery store, authorities said.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting at Martin’s Super Market in Elkhart at around 5:30 p.m.
Once at the scene, they found two deceased victims inside the store and engaged in a gunfight with the suspect.
The shootout ended with the suspect’s death. Two police officers were injured. One has been released from the hospital after receiving treatment while the other remains in stable condition.
“In this horrific situation, words cannot express the pain felt in our community when a tragic incident like this happens,” Elkhart Police Department Chief Dan Milanese said.
Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson asked the community to pray for the victims of the shooting including “our two police officers who were wounded, our heroic first responders, and those at the incident.”
