Illinois man, 22, disarms officer; takes own life with weapon

An Illinois man fatally shot himself after stealing an officer’s weapon in the early hours of Saturday.

The 22-year-old man called 911 at around 1 a.m. seeking help. When a responding officer arrived at the home, the man managed to disarm him.

“During the course of this investigation, a rapidly evolving event took place where a CPD officer was disarmed,” the Charleston Police Department said.

    The man was transported to a hospital where he was declared dead.

    “No officers were injured during the incident,” police said.

    The incident is being investigated by the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigations.
