A newborn is in critical condition after it was abandoned in the street in freezing cold near a San Antonio fire station.
Police said the infant was found early Tuesday morning, at around 3 a.m., wrapped in a towel inside a basket with the umbilical cord still attached.
Authorities said the fire station had a 24-hour safe surrender site allowing parents to drop off unwanted babies with no questions or punishment.
According to Pamela Allen of Eagles Flight Advocacy and Outreach, the baby’s mother may be a homeless woman from the area.
“You know that’s the assumption, the assumption that maybe someone who was unhoused,” Allen said.
“We’re praying for a great outcome and we’re praying that this baby will pull through.”
No arrests were made in connection to the case as the investigation continues.
