A drunken driver crashed into a stopped vehicle off the shoulder of a Mesquite, Texas interstate killing four people on New Year’s Day.
The crash occurred on Interstate 20 shortly after midnight where Mario de la Paz, 18, and Fernando de la Paz, 15, were helping their 19-year-old friend Anthony Hernandez and his father Arturo Gonzalez, 47, fix a flat tire.
Inside the SUV was a mother and two children who survived the crash. All four people fixing the tire outside were killed.
Police arrested Basilio Mares Ortiz, 35, and charged him with four counts of intoxication manslaughter.
The brothers’ aunt said that their family forgives the alleged suspect but wants him be held accountable.
“When we forgive, it’s a relief for us. For this to happen, it just came out of nowhere. We have to bring awareness. Yes, don’t drink and drive,” she said.
