The suspect who rammed his pickup truck into a crowd of New Year revelers in New Orleans killing 10 has been identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42.
Jabbar, a US citizen born in Texas, served in the U.S. Army. He was reportedly “wearing a full body armor” and “armed with an assault rifle” when he plowed a Ford electric pickup truck into the crowd at high speed.
The suspect then stepped out of the truck and started firing at officers before he was killed.
Investigators recovered a handgun and an AR-style rifle from the scene.
Local news outlets reported that the suspect was carrying an ISIS flag and explosive devices in the truck.
Police Commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick said Jabbar was “hell-bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did” and that he tried “to run over as many people as he could.”
