Former Chippewas quarterback, 27, dies in ‘tragic hunting accident’

Former CMU player Tommy Lazzaro died Sunday after a “tragic hunting accident” in Destin, Florida. He was 27.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office said Lazzaro, a former Chippewas quarterback, died at the scene of the accident at the Eglin Air Force Base.

Lazzaro, also known as “Touchdown Tommy”, played 20 games for the Chippewas helping them reach the MAC Championship Game in 2019.

    “When we took over the program, Tommy was truly our leader in so many ways,” former coach Jim McElwain said.

    “CMU Football was blessed to have him and will always remember him for all he did for many of us. He will be missed by all of the Chippewas.”

    “He was a great soul,” added former CMU athletic director Michael Alford. “Couldn’t have met a better person who cared about others.”
