Illinois state trooper fatally struck by passing vehicle while removing debris from roadway

An Illinois State trooper was struck and killed by a passing vehicle while removing debris from a roadway the day before Christmas Eve.

Trooper Clay M. Carns, 35, was struck at around 10 p.m. Monday while picking up debris from the southbound lane of I-55 north of Blodgett Road near Channahon.

  • About an hour later, the 11-year veteran succumbed to his injuries at St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet.

    “This is a sad day for the Illinois State Police as we mourn the death of Trooper Clay M. Carns who was killed while serving the people of Illinois and working to keep our roadways safe,” said ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly.

    “Please keep Trooper Carns, his family, loved ones, and his ISP family in your thoughts, prayers, and hearts during this most difficult time.”
