Triple homicide suspect killed in shootout with police in Illinois

The suspected killer of three Mahomet, Illinois residents was gunned down by police after a confrontation in Berwyn late Wednesday.

Officers found three people suffering life-threatening gunshot wounds at around 9:40 p.m. on South Riverside Court in Mahomet.

Sara E. Mason, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene while the two other victims, Janis L. Mason, 61, and Caleb M. Mason, 23, died shortly after arriving at Carle Foundation Hospital.

Investigators identified the suspect as 24-year-old John R. Lyons of Westchester, Illinois.

  • Lyons fled to Berwyn after the shootings where officers located him at around 11:38 p.m.

    The suspect tried to flee on foot and “then forced entry into a residence where he fatally shot two dogs.”

    “Officers then observed the offender fleeing eastbound into a yard…the suspect disobeyed the officers’ verbal commands to stop and proceeded to shoot at police officers.”

    The officers fired back killing Lyons. The Illinois State Police is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
