A Utah father shot his wife and four children before turning the gun on himself at the family’s West Valley City home this weekend.
A concerned relative alerted the police after the mother failed to show up for work on Sunday. The relative went to the home and found an injured son in the garage.
Police found the bodies of the 38-year-old woman and her two daughters, aged 9 and 2, in an upstairs bedroom.
The father and an 11-year-old son were found deceased in the living room. A gun was discovered under the father’s body.
Officers found the sole survivor of the massacre, a 17-year-old boy, in the garage with a gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators believe the teen was shot inside the home and managed to escape to the garage.
He was listed in critical condition as of Wednesday evening, suffering a severe brain injury and unable to communicate with police.
“We understand how frustrating it is for an incident of this magnitude to happen and to not understand why. We know people want to know why. We want to know why,” said Police Spokesperson Roxeanne Vainuku.
“The truth is we may never know. It’s hard to comprehend.”
