Two pilots were killed in a fiery small plane crash not long after taking off from Honolulu’s airport Tuesday evening.
Kamaka Air Flight 689 slammed into a building at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport at around 3:15 p.m.
The aircraft crashed into the building after veering at low altitude into the airport area before bursting into flames.
“Kamaka Flight 689, you’re turning right, correct?” the control tower was heard asking in an audio obtained by local news outlets.
“Kamaka 689, we are, we have, uh, we’re out of control here.”
“OK, Kamaka 689, if you can land, if you can level it off, that’s fine. Any runway, any place you can do.”
Moments later, the plane crashed killing Preston Kaluhiwa, a Kamehameha Schools graduate, and Hiram Defries, a Punahou School graduate and pilot in training.
“It is with heavy hearts that Kamaka Air confirms the loss of two members of the Kamaka Air family in an accident,” CEO David Hinderland said.
