Florida deputy shot to death during traffic stop: ‘It just breaks our hearts’

A Charlotte County Sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot during a routine traffic stop last weekend.

Cpl. Elio Diaz was shot at a gas station near Charlotte Harbor late Sunday when he pulled over a white truck driven by Andrew Mostyn.

Mostyn grabbed a rifle and shot Diaz before taking off. Fellow deputies located him and a confrontation ensued.

    The clerk at the gas station said she administered CPR on the dying deputy but couldn’t save him.

    “We are all mourning our brother, Cpl. Elio Diaz. Please know that your messages, comments, and prayers are heard and appreciated by our members all throughout the agency,” the sheriff’s department said.
