Two 16-year-olds were killed and three other juveniles were injured late Saturday at a pop-up party in North Houston.
The shooting occurred just before 11:30 p.m. at an empty business off Jensen Drive and Topping Street, authorities said.
A large crowd of mostly juveniles was gathering at the “pop-up club” for an unlicensed party when gunfire erupted.
A 16-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene and a 16-year-old girl was rushed to Texas Children’s Hospital where she died.
Three other teens suffered gunshot wounds including a 13-year-old listed in critical condition.
“Since they’re not under any regulations, which is what caused the problems with these types of events with no regulations, there’s nothing guarding it,” said Assistant Police Chief Luis Menendez.
Mayor John Whitmire was also at the scene following the mass shooting.
“It’s a tragedy. I feel for the families. We ought to keep them in our prayers. We lost some young people tonight that was very preventable if they didn’t come to locations such as this,” he said.
