Former OpenAI researcher turned whistleblower takes own life in San Francisco home

A former OpenAI researcher was found dead in his San Francisco home weeks after he sued the company for violating copyright laws, authorities said.

Suchir Balaji, 26, took his own life on November 26 three months after he claimed his former company violated copyright laws while developing ChatGPT.

  • Balaji joined the artificial intelligence research company in 2020. He left OpenAI last summer because he “no longer wanted to contribute to technologies that he believed would bring society more harm than benefit.”

    “If you believe what I believe, you have to just leave the company.”

    The New York Times considered Balaji a person with “unique and relevant documents” that would be useful in their lawsuit against OpenAI and partner Microsoft.
