Topeka news, Kansas news.

A former Kansas detective accused of several offenses including rape was found dead on the day his federal trial was set to begin.

Roger Golubski, 71, was charged with violating the civil rights of two women over several years in the late 90s and early 2000s.

His trial was set to start on Monday, the day he was found dead in his home in the 700 block of South 9th Street from a gunshot wound.

Authorities said that foul play was not suspected in the death of Golubski who was found lifeless on his back porch.

Golubski had maintained innocence and had been on house arrest while awaiting trial due to health issues.

“He didn’t come back one time to rape me. He came back and back,” victim Ophelia Williams said.

“He said, ‘I am the police,’ What good would it do? It would be a long time before anybody found me.”

The case was dismissed following Golubksi’s death.

“This matter involved extremely serious charges, and it is always difficult when a case is unable to be fully and fairly heard in a public trial and weighed and determined by a jury,” the Justice Department said.

“The proceedings in this case may be over, but its lasting impact on all the individuals and families involved remains.”
