An Oak Park, Illinois police detective was fatally shot Friday morning after responding to reports of an armed person leaving a bank.
Firefighters found Detective Allan Reddins suffering from gunshot wounds to his left side at around 9:30 a.m. when they responded to reports of shots being fired outside the bank.
Reddins, 40, died at Loyola University Medical Center at 10:10 a.m. The suspect, who also suffered gunshot wounds, remains at the same hospital in stable condition.
“The Village of Oak Park extends its deepest condolences to Detective Reddins’ family, friends, and colleagues within the Oak Park Police Department and the wider law enforcement community as they process the grief caused by this senseless act of violence,” the Oak Park Police Department said in a statement.
Reddins joined the department in May 2019. His passing marks the first line of duty death for the department since 1938.
