Firefighters putting out tree fire find body near LA homeless encampment

A deceased person was found early Thursday morning by firefighters battling a tree fire near a homeless encampment in Los Angeles.

The discovery was made at 5:06 a.m. on the 500 block of East Vernon Avenue in the South Park neighborhood of the city, the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Crews putting out the tree fire located a body in a “larger area of rubbish” near the scene of the blaze.

  • The LAFD said that it was immediately unclear whether the person died from the fire or died earlier.

    “Circumstances around the dead are unclear at this time and will be investigated,” the department added.

    Witnesses reported hearing a woman screaming just before the blaze. Flames did not spread to nearby houses.
