The cause of death of an Alabama high school player was revealed months after the teen collapsed during football practice.
Coffee County Coroner Arnold Woodham said Thursday that 14-year-old Semaj Wilkins died of congestive heart failure last August.
“[The autopsy] determined that the cause of death was congestive heart failure due to cardiomegaly with biventricular hypertrophy, resulting from a coronary anomaly,” Woodham said in a statement.
The New Brockton High School freshman collapsed at the beginning of afternoon training as temperatures reached 100 degrees.
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Wilkins family during this difficult time,” the statement added.
“We also extend our support to the facility, students, and staff of New Brockton High School.”
