A Tennessee high school student was killed and another wounded in a drive-by shooting late Wednesday.
The 16-year-olds were shot in the Northcrest subdivision in Ripley at around 7:30 p.m., police said.
The deceased victim was identified as Ripley High School senior and varsity football player Demarcus Barnes.
Another 16-year-old survived with a gunshot wound in the leg.
A memorial in Demarcus’ honor was set outside his high school. Lauderdale County Schools Superintendent issued a statement following his death.
“Senseless tragedies like this are all too common in our region, and we are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our students,” the statement read in part.
“We kindly ask for your continued prayers for our student body and the entire community as we navigate this difficult time.”
