A Mississippi worker died in a “horrific” accident Monday when hot asphalt poured onto him while he repaired a dump truck.
41-year-old Darrell Sheriff was reportedly underneath the truck trying to repair it when the tailgate opened pouring hot asphalt on him.
“It appeared to be some type of malfunction with his dump truck,” Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said describing the “horrific situation.”
Local media outlets reported that the incident occurred at AJ Materials at around 10:30 a.m. Monday.
Traumatized witnesses tried to help the private contractor who was buried under the hot asphalt.
“He tried to fight to make it through those injuries but it was just too enormous for him to survive,” Wade added.
The police chief said Sheriff was a “good, hardworking family man who was just trying to make a living.”
