Four people were killed and 17 others wounded when a semitractor-trailer slammed into backed-up traffic on a Michigan interstate Saturday.
The incident occurred just before midnight on Interstate 96 where workers were installing power lines across the road.
The work forced “numerous” cars to a halt in the expressway’s westbound lane near an intersection.
When the road finally opened and the vehicle began moving slowly, a semi-tractor trailer crashed into them.
“It appears the driver of the semi-truck did not see the backup and could not stop his vehicle in time,” authorities said.
“The semi-truck was in the left lane of travel and struck numerous vehicles.”
The collision caused the truck and a dozen other vehicles to catch fire.
“Seventeen vehicle occupants have been transported to UM Sparrow Hospital and McLaren Hospital in Lansing for serious injuries.”
