Parents charged after abused toddler found buried in California wilderness

The parents of a 2-year-old girl were arrested months after the remains of their child were discovered in the California wilderness following a wellness check.

Shasta County authorities conducted a welfare check on the girl on January 8.

The girl’s parents, Riley and Amanda Royal told detectives that she had died three months earlier.

  • Investigators located the toddler’s remains in the Whiskeytown Recreation Area and exhumed them the following day.

    An Autopsy revealed the girl was the victim of a homicide and illegally buried.

    Riley, 28, and Amanda, 24, were charged with murder with special allegations and child abuse resulting in death.
