A 6-magnitude earthquake rocked the Oregon coast Wednesday afternoon, the US Geological Survey said.
The massive quake occurred at 1:15 p.m. local time about 170 miles west of Bandon and 250 miles west-southwest of Salem, the USGS said.
Officials assured residents that a tsunami was not expected to form in the Pacific Ocean but warned of moderate aftershocks.
“This is a very typical mag 6 earthquake in the Blanco Transform fault, very far offshore of Oregon,” Harold Tobin, director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network said.
“We see at least one such earthquake nearly every year.”
The earthquake was recorded at a depth of about six miles which meant that light-to-medium shaking was probably felt across western Oregon and northern California.
“It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas,” reported Crisis 24.
“Moderate-to-light aftershocks are likely over the coming days. The event has not prompted any tsunami advisories.”
