Santa Monica College shooter takes own life after being surrounded by police

The suspected gunman accused of shooting an employee at a Santa Monica College satellite campus late Monday died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The incident occurred at the Center for Media and Design just before 10 p.m., authorities said.

39-year-old Davon Durrell Dean, a college employee, opened fire critically wounding a custodial operations manager before fleeing the scene.

  • Dean remained at large until the following afternoon, when officers spotted his vehicle in Hawthorne, about 12 miles south of Santa Monica.

    A car chase involving Hawthorne police officers ensued. The suspect’s car was eventually boxed in by police.

    “Despite the efforts of the Hawthorne Police Department’s Crisis Negotiations Team, Dean was found deceased inside his vehicle from a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” police said.

    The Santa Monica College Chief of Police Johnnie Adams described the shooting as “a workplace violence incident, not a random act.”
