Decorated Atlanta investigator fatally shot by homeowner after breaking into neighbor’s home

A decorated Atlanta cop was fatally shot this week after he allegedly broke into his neighbor’s home.

Aubree Horton, 32, suffered fatal gunshot wounds on October 4 when his neighbor fired at him in self-defense.

Investigators said their colleague may have been under the influence of narcotics or experiencing a mental health episode when he tried the break-in.

  • “This individual was able to make his way into the residence and was confronted by the homeowner,” the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

    “The homeowner, acting in self-defense, shot this person inside his residence,”

    “The shot was fatal and the individual died at the scene.”

    Horton had been a detective with the Atlanta Police Department since 2015. Just days before his death, he had been named “Investigator of the Year” by the Atlanta Police Foundation.
