Missouri teen, 18, fatally shoots adoptive father with rifle: ‘He has never been violent’

A Missouri teen is behind bars after he allegedly shot and killed his adoptive father with a rifle last weekend.

Carter J. Curtis, 18, allegedly called 911 Saturday night after gunning down 41-year-old John McMurphy.

Officers arrived at the Adrian residence at around 11:30 p.m. to find two women screaming in the driveway “He has never been violent.”

The victim was found upstairs, laying face down with a gunshot wound to his head.

    McMurphy’s wife said she heard the sound of a gunshot and encountered the teen in the hallway, holding a rifle.

    The teen handed her the rifle telling her that he “already called 911,” and that he “had to do it.”

    “I want to thank everyone for their fast response to this incident. I take pride in working together to put the safety and security of this community first,” Adrian Police Chief Chris Dillon said.

    “We would like to offer our condolences to the family and friends affected by this tragic event. We have no further information at this time.”
