An Alabama death row inmate was executed with nitrogen gas on Thursday, becoming the nation’s second inmate to be put to death through the controversial procedure.
Alan Eugene Miller, 59, was pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m., 20 minutes after the gas flow started, reporter Marty Roney who witnessed the execution said.
Miller struggled against his restraints and gasped for air for about two minutes before losing consciousness at 6:19 p.m.
He gasped more times before taking his last breath at 6:26 p.m., according to Roney.
His last words were “I didn’t do anything to be here. I didn’t do anything to be on death row. Thank you.”
Miller was convicted of shooting his three coworkers, Terry Jarvis, Lee Hodbrooks, and Christopher Yancy, to death in two workplaces On Aug. 5, 1999.
At the time, Miller suffered from a delusional disorder that made him believe the three victims were spreading rumors about him.
