Several Democrats called for New York City Mayor Eric Adams to resign after he was indicted on federal criminal charges on Wednesday.

The charges include federal bribery, fraud, and campaign finance, and make Adams the first mayor in New York City’s history to be indicted while in office.

Adams commented on the indictment on Wednesday saying that he “always knew that if I my ground for New Yorkers that I would be a target – and a target I became.”

“If I am charged, I am innocent and I will fight this with every ounce of my strength and spirit,” he added.

Among Democrats who called for Adams to resign are Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, former NYC Mayoral Candidate Andrew Yang, NY State Sens. Zellnor Myrie and Brad Holyman, and NYC Councilman Lincoln Restler.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who had the power to remove Adams from office, has yet to speak on the mayor’s indictment.
