2 dead; 3 injured in shooting in downtown Minneapolis

Two people were killed and three others wounded early Saturday morning when gunfire erupted in downtown Minneapolis.

The shooting took place at the intersection of Fifth Street and Hennepin Avenue shortly before 2 a.m., police said.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said officers responded to reports of a fight before things escalated into a shooting while they were near the scene.

The officers rushed to the scene where they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds.

  • Police said two men, aged 20 and 21, were fatally injured. A 21-year-old woman, a 16-year-old girl, and a 17-year-old girl were transported to Hennepin Healthcare with non-life-threatening injuries.

    At least one person was taken into custody for inciting a riot and a firearm was recovered from the scene.

    “MPD investigators will work tirelessly to bring whoever is responsible for this tragic incident to justice,” O’Hara added.

    “We will continue with our late-night safety plan, and work with our law enforcement and community-based partners to enhance the level of safety for all.”
