Off-duty Florida deputy dies in crash involving semi-truck: ‘More than just a colleague’

A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy was killed in a crash involving a semi-truck while heading home from work early Thursday.

Darell Brown, 40, was traveling in his personal vehicle and off-duty at the time of the crash that occurred on U.S. Highway 301 in Thonotosassa Thursday morning.

  • Brown, who leaves behind a blended family of five children, joined the department in 2015 and “faithfully served his community as a detention deputy in both detention facilities.”

    “Our hearts break for the family, friends, and loved ones of Deputy Brown as they navigate this incomprehensible loss,” said HC Sheriff Chad Chronister.

    “Deputy Brown was more than just a colleague; he was a friend, a mentor, and a source of inspiration to many.”
