Magnitude 4.7 earthquake shakes southern California

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck just north of Malibu Thursday morning rattling southern California and triggering a series of aftershocks.

The tremor struck at 7:28 a.m. at a depth of about seven miles close to the Malibu fault.

Shaking was felt in widespread parts of Southern California including Hermosa Beach, Anaheim, Santa Monica, Hollywood Hills, and San Fernando Valley.

It was followed by at least three aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 2 to 3.4.

    “Earthquakes like to cluster up with other earthquakes in space and in time, and this earthquake is no exception,” the expert said.

    A worker at a Malibu area restaurant recalled how the shaking caused windows and display cases to rattle violently for a few seconds.

    “I thought somebody dropped something in the back. I was confused,” he said.
