A Port St. Joe High School honors student died this week after collapsing on the field during an away football game.
18-year-old Chance Gainer collapsed Friday night while he played against Liberty County High School.
Paramedics rushed to help Gainer who had no pulse, Gulf County Schools Superintendent Jim Norton said.
They ultimately detected a pulse as they put Gainer into an ambulance. The teen was pronounced dead shortly later at Blountstown Hospital.
Norton described Gainer as an athlete with “world-class speed” but more importantly with “a world-class personality.”
Gainer, who also had a grade point average better than 4.0, recently visited Vanderbilt University where he planned to attend college.
