A Florida marathon runner’s body was recovered from a river Monday, five days after she left her home for a run without shoes.
Arielle Valdes, 21, disappeared on August 28 and was last caught on surveillance footage running towards the Edison Bridge that day at around 6:50 p.m.
Lee County authorities launched an extensive search for Valdes using K9s, drones, and boats before locating her body in the mangroves of the Caloosahatchee River between Edison Bridge and Caloosahatchee Bridge.
The avid runner’s mother told cops her daughter “had been acting strange for the last couple of days and had mentioned that she was hearing demon voices in her head.”
“Preliminary, there is no evidence to indicate that foul play was involved,” police said.
“Our hearts remain with Arielle’s family and loved ones as they navigate the coming days during this time of grief.”
