Authorities in Beaufort County, South Carolina believe that a deceased man found underneath a Hilton Head Island residence is likely a Massachusetts vacationer who vanished ten days ago.
Deputies responding to “suspicious activity” found the body under the rental home at around 11:30 a.m. Monday.
“The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, to determine the manner of death, as well as positively identify the decedent,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Family members identified the deceased as 60-year-old Stanley Kotowski. He was reported missing on August 16 after leaving his family’s rental at Sea Pines Resort, barefoot.
His wife revealed he suffered paranoia in the few weeks leading to his disappearance.
“He just walked out the door. He had really bad insomnia for about a month. He doesn’t have dementia. His anxiety just kept getting worse and worse and worse and he started to get a little paranoid.”
The man believed the resort was a “set-up” and that people were after him.
