A Texas deputy constable was gunned down in his personal car as he drove to work Tuesday, authorities said.
Harris County deputy constable Maher Husseini was shot dead by a gunman who walked to his vehicle and fired multiple times before taking off.
Police later arrested the suspect who led them on a chase that ended with him jumping into the waters off Galveston and swimming away before a marine unit intervened and arrested him.
Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz said that a motive remains unclear. Investigators are still working to determine whether the fatal shooting was targeted or just a road rage incident.
“It’s an awful thing for the community, for someone to lose their life, someone that’s dedicated their life to public service,” Diaz said.
“It is absolutely tragic.”
