Authorities in Maine said a New Hampshire man was shot dead after he killed his wife and 8-year-old child in a deadly crime spree early Tuesday.
The suspect called 911 at around 2 a.m. telling York, Maine police that he had killed his wife during a fight at their Troy, New Hampshire home.
Officers tracked the phone call to Kittery, Maine where the suspect’s vehicle was found parked on the southbound side of the I-95 bridge, across the state line in Maine.
Police attempted to negotiate the suspect’s surrender but he “exited his vehicle and raised a firearm.”
A Maine State trooper and two NH troopers “responded with deadly force.” The suspect then fell over the bridge into the river below.
His body was later recovered by the US Coast Guard.
“Law enforcement officers on scene located an 8-year-old child fatally shot in the back seat of the vehicle,” Maine State Police Commander Colonel Bill Ross said.
“The child’s death is not associated with the police officers’ use of deadly force.”
The suspect’s wife was found dead inside the Troy residence. Police believe the slain juvenile was the couple’s child.
