A 25-year veteran Washington D.C. was fatally shot Wednesday while he tried to retrieve a loaded firearm from a storm drain, the Metropolitan Police Department.

Investigator Wayne David was among a group of officers canvassing a street in Kenilworth neighborhood on August 28, trying to approach an armed suspect.

The suspect discarded his weapon in a storm drain before taking off on a motorcycle.

    “Investigator David was the epitome of a great officer,” Chief of Police Pamela Smith said.

    “He was a dedicated and highly respected member of the department, and this is a tremendous loss for all of us.”

    The Metropolitan Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are investigating the incident.
