A 25-year veteran Washington D.C. was fatally shot Wednesday while he tried to retrieve a loaded firearm from a storm drain, the Metropolitan Police Department.
Investigator Wayne David was among a group of officers canvassing a street in Kenilworth neighborhood on August 28, trying to approach an armed suspect.
The suspect discarded his weapon in a storm drain before taking off on a motorcycle.
Officer David attempted to retrieve the gun when it discharged, fatally hitting David.
“Investigator David was the epitome of a great officer,” Chief of Police Pamela Smith said.
“He was a dedicated and highly respected member of the department, and this is a tremendous loss for all of us.”
The Metropolitan Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are investigating the incident.
