Utah boy, 5, accidentally kills himself after finding loaded, unsecured gun

A Utah boy is dead after he accidentally shot himself with a loaded, unsecured gun inside his family’s Santaquin home Thursday.

The 5-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders despite attempts to save his life.

Police found him in a back bedroom next to a 9mm handgun. The parents were reportedly in a separate room when the shooting happened.

  • “At this time, we’re not pursuing charges and we’re deeming this a tragic incident,” said Det. Tipler.

    The boy got a hold of the loaded, unsecured gun and fired a single shot fatally injuring himself.

    “The best practice is, is if you have a gun lock of some sort, always keep your gun unloaded and your ammo away from your gun, put your gun inside of a safe,” the detectives advised.
