A Texas middle school student died Wednesday after suffering a medical emergency in the gym of the school.
Landon Payton, 14, suffered the emergency in front of his P.E. teacher and special education assistant teacher who did not notice anything suggesting he was feeling unwell.
The Houston Independent School District said the 8th grader suffered the fatal medical issue when students were in “free play” during the last part of the period.
“What we have been able to gather, we believe the staff and EMS responded quickly and appropriately,” the HISD said.
“We believe they did everything they could and cared for Landon in a way that any parent would want his or her child cared for in an emergency.”
The teen’s father, Alexis Payton, expressed his frustration for not having answers to what led to Landon’s sudden death.
“I was there at the end. I saw my son die. All I want is closure. They don’t even wanna give me closure. We gotta go through the courts.”
