100 people treated for heat-related illness at Colorado airshow

About 100 people were treated for heat-related illness at a Colorado airshow on Saturday, officials said.

At least 10 attendees needed to receive treatment at local hospitals a few hours after attending the two-day Pikes Peak Air Show.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department crews responded to a mass-causality incident at the sold-out event where 30,000 attendees were expected to show up.

At least a hundred people received treatment by emergency responders onsite.

  • “We can call a mass casualty incident when we have something like this where we have multiple heat-related illnesses. That allows us to order more resources,” CSFD Public Information Officer Ashley Franco said.

    The National Weather Service said that temperatures in the area reached a high of 96 degrees.

    “The CSFD works and prepares very closely with the airport and event organizers when large events are held,” CSFD Chief Randy Royal said.

    “Today, like every day, we had a plan in place in the event we needed to activate it.”
