Newlywed couple, bride’s mom killed in tragic crash on way to honeymoon: ‘We were just happy’

A newlywed couple and a third victim were killed in a crash Thursday morning when a semi-truck hauling large plastic piping overturned on a Colorado highway.

The victims’ car was traveling westbound on Interstate 70 in Wheat Ridge just before 8:30 a.m. when the truck crashed and spilled the piping onto the road lanes causing three other vehicles to crash.

Ruben Rodriguez, 33, Juliana Rodriguez Plata, 37, and Plata’s mom Luz Melba Martinez perished in the crash.

    Ruben and Juliana got married last weekend, the family said. They were on their way to the mountains for a honeymoon when tragedy struck.

    “We were just happy. We were just having fun. And then we get this news that they’re gone,” Ruben’s sister-in-law said.

    “And then the baby without both of his parents, you know, it’s hard. It’s hard for the family.”
