Teen roofing worker, 16, dies from electrocution while working at Kansas airport

A teenager roofing worker died by electrocution Tuesday morning while working on a Great Bend city building, Barton County authorities said.

The teen and a 24-year-old man were in a hangar near the terminal building of an airport when they came into contact with high-voltage power lines.

The man managed to leave the bucket he and the teen were in and reached the roof while the younger employee remained unresponsive in the bucket.

  • Power was shut off to allow rescuers to reach the victim, later identified as 16-year-old Ivan Joel Mollins.

    Rescuers reached Mollins about 30 minutes after the incident; he was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

    The other worker was badly burned in the accident. He remains hospitalized.

    The investigation into the incident is being led by the Barton County Sheriff’s Office since it happened on city property.
