Virginia high school football player, 15, collapses; dies during practice

A Virginia high school football player died Monday after he collapsed during a training session, officials said.

Hopewell High School student Jayvion Taylor died at a hospital shortly after he collapsed while his team took a water break following 40 minutes of drills.

High school officials described Taylor as “a light to all who met him” and “the most genuine and remarkable student.”

  • However, a school employee complained of the lack of an athletic trainer which would have better handled the emergency.

    “That comfort of having a trained medical professional on-site, just in case anything were to happen, was always there. But then, they cut the trainer,” the employee who asked to remain anonymous said.

    “This is our worst nightmare. I’m not saying having a trainer would have saved that young man’s life, but I feel like it would have at least definitely given us a better fighting chance.”
