Base jumper dies attempting illegal ‘high-risk’ activity at Grand Canyon

The body of a BASE jumper was recovered Friday morning after he fell 500 feet to his death while trying an illegal jump at the Grand Canyon, the National Park Service said.

The victim was attempting a base jump from Yavapai Point at around 7:30 a.m. when he plunged from the south rim of the Grand Canyon.

“Park rangers responded and located the body of a deceased male approximately 500 feet below the rim, along with a deployed parachute,” officials said.

    Base is a recreational sport consisting of jumping off fixated objects using a parachute.

    The NPS said the “high-risk activity” is prohibited in the Grand Canyon.
