A couple is facing charges after a Missouri toddler fell and died from a high-rise’s eighth story earlier this week.
The 3-year-old suffered fatal head trauma and broken bones when he fell from the window at around 10 a.m. Monday.
Moses Lee Bass, 30, and his girlfriend Destiny Leeann Randle, 28, knew their children could easily fall from the window despite attempts they made to secure it.
The couple admitted that the 3-year-old knew how to remove a metal pole the parents used to keep the window shut and would often throw toys from the window.
Bass and Randle also blamed the apartment management for not intervening to fix the window despite several requests they made since they moved in about a year ago.
Prosecutors revealed that aside from the unsecured window, the apartment was filled with trash “specifically the kitchen which has huge piles of trash built up in a shopping cart.”
“All the beds in the children’s rooms were covered in old dirt and did not have any sheets on them,” a probable cause statement read.
“Old, used diapers were also found in the children’s room with no receptacle to hold them. The children’s room specifically smelled of urine.”
Three other children were removed from the home and placed in the custody of children's services.
