At least three inmates died and nine others were injured in an altercation at a maximum-security prison in eastern Nevada jail on Tuesday, officials announced.
The Nevada Department of Corrections did not provide further details about the deadly incident that occurred in the rural mining city of Ely.
The prison remained on lockdown for hours as authorities investigated the violence.
Local media outlets suggested the altercation stemmed from a feud between two rival gangs inside the facility.
Identities of the victims and the conditions of the injured were also undisclosed.
In December 2022, inmates held a hunger strike at the Ely State Prison to protest unsafe conditions and inadequate food portions at the only maximum-security prison in Nevada.
