‘He never had a bad day’: Florida college football player collapses, dies during workout

A Florida college football player died Tuesday after he collapsed during a workout, his family said.

Hundreds attended a Thursday vigil for Denali Smith, 20, whose sudden death left an entire community reeling in shock.

Smith collapsed while practicing at Wellington High School and couldn’t be revived. His cause of death remains pending.

  • “He was a true leader, he had a heart of gold, and never had a bad day. He was the definition of positive,” Latoya Mills said of her late son.

    Mills, who played for the football team at Graceland University in Iowa, was set to turn 21 on Thursday.

    “Nobody else could get you motivated, ready to play like Denali did,” Smith’s friend Josh Miloch said.

    “He was a blessing. A big blessing in my life.”
