Iowa woman collapses; dies while hiking at Colorado National Monument

A Cedar Rapids, Iowa woman died this week while hiking at a Colorado National Monument, officials said.

Marsha Cook, 54, collapsed and lost consciousness two miles into the Lower Monument Canyon Trail at around 2:30 p.m. Monday, the National Park Service said.

Rangers rushed to the scene and rendered aid to Cook but life-saving measures were unsuccessful, the agency stated.

  • “(The) Colorado National Monument staff would like to extend their condolences to the hiker’s family and friends,” the statement added.

    Park service warned hikers of heat exhaustion and heat strokes during hot weather.

    “Daytime temperatures in Colorado National Monument have exceeded 90 degrees in the past week, and hit weather is expected throughout the summer,” officials said.

    “Hikers should plan to hike in early morning or late afternoon, before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m., to reduce exposure to heat.”
