‘Heart-wrenching tragedy’: Florida toddler fatally struck in crash while riding bike

A Florida toddler died in a tragic crash Thursday evening after he was struck and killed while riding his bike, authorities said.

The 3-year-old boy was riding his bicycle with his mother and siblings in the Place One Condominiums parking lot in Tampa at around 7 p.m. when the tragedy happened.

A Toyota RAV4 turned a corner and struck the child, killing him at the scene.

“This is a devastating and heart-wrenching tragedy for everyone involved,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister.

    The driver of the Toyota RAV5 stayed at the scene and is cooperating in the investigation. Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.

    Police Media Relations Manager Jessica Lang said that when deputies responded to the scene, “all they could do is pray.”

    “Our deputies are moms, they’re dads, and to see a child who is deceased by an unfortunate and tragic accident is heartbreaking,” she added.
