5.1 magnitude earthquake rattles West Texas; state of disaster declared in Scurry County

A 5.1 magnitude earthquake rocked West Texas early Friday causing damages in Scurry County, authorities said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the strong quake occurred at 9:28 a.m. eight miles northeast of Hermleigh, Texas.

The initial tremor was followed by a 3.2 magnitude at the same location 12 minutes later.

Residents in northwest Lubbock and across the South Plains and West Texas reported feeling the earthquake.

    The county has recorded 61 earthquakes over the last seven days.

    “Since the first earthquake that was felt on July 22, 2024, at about 9:38 PM, a 4.9, and a 4.4 at about 9:46 PM to today’s 5.0 at about 9:28 AM July 26, 2024, damage has been found throughout Scurry County in businesses and residences,” Judge Dan Hicks wrote.

    Hicks added that the Texas Department of Emergency Management is assessing the damage throughout the area.
