Abilene news, Texas news.

A 4.9 magnitude rocked the Texas city of Abilene last night causing minor damages to buildings and properties.

The tremor was strong enough to cause significant shaking indoors and was felt as far away as Austin, about 200 miles to the southeast.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake’s epicenter was near the Scurry-Fisher County line, about 10 miles northeast of Hermleigh.

The quake occurred at 10:38 p.m. local time. Its focal point was located just 4.8 miles beneath the surface.

A few minutes later, a second tremor with 4.4. magnitude was reported northwest of the first epicenter.

Northern Texas, southern Oklahoma, and New Mexico residents felt the two quakes.

A 4.9 magnitude earthquake can cause minor damage to buildings such as small cracks in walls and ceilings and wake sleeping people as well as rattle windows, doors, and dishes.
